Tweaking the Media Cabinet...

Okay those of you that have been following here for awhile now have seen a few different versions of our media cabinet.  For those of you who don't remember, here's a quick look back...

This is how it started out - as a bookcase that my parent's bought back in the '70's.

Here I had tried to hide the ugly faux woodgrain on the doors.

When McG won the TV and we needed a cabinet for it, we took off the top hutch part and took off the doors.

Then I added white foam core to the back, to lighten it up and make the tchochkes stand out more.

Back then when I added the foam core, many of you suggested I should have added a color to the backing.
A couple of weeks ago, I found some great wrapping paper on clearance.

I hung onto it for a while, thinking that I would use it to wrap a gift for an upcoming shower, but this week I decided to tweak the media cabinet once again. I emptied the shelves and took out the foam core and wrapped it in this paper.

I put it back in place and added back in the shelves and then stood back to admire.  The coral color of the paper reads more of a red inside the cabinet, but I LOVED it!

Then I went around the house and collected up all my owls.

They all have a new home and I am just loving it.  A whole new look for just 89 cents!
Gotta love it!!

Are you doing some cheap tweaks at your house - I'd love to hear about them!

A Little Mid-Week Pick Me Up!

Okay folks, the weather this winter has really been cold and snowy for most of us and I for one have been ready for a little bit of spring for many weeks now.

Today I am going to show you how I got my pick-me-up this week...Are you ready???

I love a great manicure like many of you, but let's face it - it's not always in the budget.  My daughter writes the blog My Beauty Full Adventure and she is forever getting great beauty products to try out.  She recently was sent these to try and she LOVED them.

When I saw these on sale at Target Canada last week I knew they would be a cheap way to help fight off the winter blues.  They are normally $9.99, but these were on sale for just $2.84.  They come in 2 lengths medium and short.  I would have purchased the short as my nails are not long and lustrious, but I had to take what was there and that was the medium length.  However, they were very easy to cut down and file once they had adhered.

There is no glue required as they have an adhesive backing that is amazingly strong.

It comes with 24 nails of various sizes in this cute bottle that looks like a nail polish bottle.  You match the pre-painted nail to your own nails, clean your nails and wipe them down with the enclosed pad and you are good to start.  They were amazingly easy to put on and very easy to cut down and file.  The best part is they look real, not plastic-y and fake.

This colour is called Almost Famous.  I would really recommend them - if even just to give yourself a mid-week pick me up!!

This would also be a great way to fancy up your manicure for a upcoming function, I would definitely recommend that you take a look at this product.  This is NOT a sponsored post and these are just my own views.  I will keep you posted as to how long they last.  My daughter took hers off after a week but she had very good luck with them and she's not doing housework everyday.  I'm not sure they will stand up as well if you have your hands in water a lot, but I guess only time will tell!

Sunlit Sunday

My friend Karen over @ My Little Home and Garden runs a great weekly link up called Sunlit Sunday.

It's a great place to see some sunshine now that old man Winter has us in his icy grips.

It's snowing here again today...two more inches of the white stuff expected here and some more record cold days on the way this week.

We did see the sun here a couple of times this week, and when it hit, I grabbed my camera in the hopes of having something to link up over at Karen's.

These images are what is keeping me warm and hopeful that warmer days are just around the corner.

Enjoy!

Thanks for stopping by!  Enjoy the rest of your day!

More Target Finds!

I was back browsing the clearance aisles at my local Target last week.  I honestly didn't think I was going to like Target Canada, especially after shopping for so many years at Target in Michigan.

At first I didn't like the layout of the local store, and it was disappointing that they didn't have the concession stand with the popcorn, because it was a tradition of ours, especially when we shopped over there with the kids.

However, in the last few weeks, I am finding myself inside our local store more and more.  Having Christmas money to spend didn't hurt either...and I still have a bit of money that I'm holding onto "just in case" I find some great sales there or at Homesense, since my daughter got me a giftcard for Christmas!

Anyway - the clearance items were marked down even further last week.  I purchased a funky lampshade for the aqua lamp that lost its shade to the new green glass lamps I had bought there earlier.

It was hard to get a good shot of it with all the snow blinding out the picture...
So I tried again in the evening after I changed out some of the accessories on the table.

It adds quite a bit of colour to the room, and it was another STEAL, at just $5.01!!

My daughter and I are going shopping today, I'm hoping to make a trip back into Target to see what else I can find!

Wish me luck!

Sunlit Sunday

The Sun has finally made an appearance here!

After a week that included record cold temperatures and ten inches of snow, and then temps in the 40's and rain yesterday...the sun is back - at least for today!

Here's hoping the sun is out where you are!!

Christmas Money Burning a Hole in My Pocket!

Yesterday I had some time to kill and some Christmas money that was burning a hole in my pocket!

I gave my Facebook followers a sneak peek yesterday afternoon of my purchases.

Two beautiful accent tables that have a distressed copper finish...and two lovely green glass lamps.

I had been watching these tables for a while now and yesterday when I went in they were marked down.

At that price I knew they would be going home with me.  I picked up two to add some symmetry in my living room.  I have never had two matching tables before.  In fact, I've never had two new tables before.  All my tables have been garage sale or road-side finds, so for me this is pretty exciting stuff!

Here's a closer look at the lamp.  The shade I already had here from the mis-matched lamps I had in the living room.  They are a beautiful shade of green and they stand about 20 inches tall without the shade.
The lamps were marked $22.49 each but rang up at $13.49.  I originally only had purchased one, but after picking my son up at school, I popped back over to Target and purchased a second one.  At that price you really couldn't go wrong!

I am loving how they look on either side of the couch.
Symmetry is not something that I usually strive for but in this case,
I am LOVING it!!

The green lamps help to pick up some of the other greens in the pillows.

Here is a shot of the tops of the tables - a great pattern!

Our local Target has selected Threshold items marked down up to 70% starting today.

Have you been shopping at Target lately?

Winter Blues...

So those of you that have followed here for a while now, already know that I really don't like winter.

It's an unavoidable fact of life though where we live - here in Ontario.

If you follow us on Facebook - you already have seen the snow we received on New Year's Day... a lovely 8 inches!  This has been the scene outside my front windows this week.

And here's a look out into the backyard.

I've kept the bird feeders full so the birds won't starve now that it's cold and snowy, but the only really regular visitors have been the squirrels.
Those pesky squirrels have even chewed through some of my strings of lights!

We packed away all the Christmas decorations this week as well.

However, I did create a winter vignette on top of the china cabinet - keeping out some of the faux pine branches and my cardinal plate.

I also left out the pine branches and pine cones in the tool box on the dining room table.

Here's a quick look at the living room now that the decorations are packed away.

It's hard to get a good picture with the glare from the snow coming in the front windows!!

We are in the midst of another big storm today - another 6-8 inches of snow!

Here's hoping the weather is better where you are!

Are you finding your home just a little bare now that the Christmas decorations are packed away?
If so, I'd love to know what you are doing to decorate for winter!!
